It's Nice that - Steven Heller and Greg D’Onofrio on six modernist works that impacted the world of design

Origonal Article: https://www.itsnicethat.com/articles/steven-heller-greg-donofrio-the-moderns-graphic-design-031017

Within this article, it discusses the launch of a publication called 'The Moderns: Midcentury American Graphic Design courtesy' and the article is an interview with the two authors of the book. To give an introduction to the publication Steven Heller and Greg D’Onofrio discuss what they believe to be the six most important pieces of American modernist design and discuss how these pieces still impact today.

Out of the pieces of design, they believe that the important to american modernist I belive this design to be the most successful. The poster is for an Inflatable Sculpture exhibition at the New York Jewish Museum, the poster consists of a less is more design aesthetic using simple black lines representing the concept of Inflatable. The warped lines also represent a large amount of movement that would be attributed to the fact that the sculptures were inflated by helium and air causing movement. I really enjoy the simple aesthetic nature of modernist posters as there simplistic nature shows the bare minimum of information yet displays everything that is needed to advertise its intended purpose.

Leeds Light Night

Leeds light night is an annual event held in the city that draws huge crowds to illuminating installations throughout the city on the 5th and 6th of October held at various locations throughout the night. One of my favorite installations was at the city hall where some strange mannequin with projected faces on the miss-shaped heads as well as a projection onto the entire building reacting and supported by an instrumental electronic song. As well as this there was a street parade traveling from location to location with illuminated umbrellas as they appeared in the middle of a performance at Queens Square. I also saw an amazing installation down by the Royal Armoury which was a large moon held and illuminated over the river causing many beautiful reflections upon the water itself.

design kids

In today's workshop with Frankie from design kinds, i found her journey to where she is very interesting and inspiring as anything is possible if you try hard enough, and that you dont have to take a conventional route.

The workshop made me think about what i should be attending and be doing and who i should be talking to make my journey as a designer happen. In the workshop booklet it suggested an average amount of different things that we should be doing and interesting with go get were we want to be, this was suprising alot more than i expected but i am challenging myself to do as many as i can so I can get to my end goal of being a successful graphic designer.

The workshop also made me think about actual options for the future after university by talking through what different types of jobs entail. From the list that we want through the most interesting options to me are :
junior designer in a studio
junior designer in an advertising agency
in-house graphic designer
freelance graphic designer
